at face value. People will consider you mean and negative and a trou-
blemaker. Rise above it. Just smile and know you are not a sucker
you just asked about something before you accepted it as truth.
And one more thing: When you voice your cynicism, gauge the
reaction to what you have to say. If there is a hostile reaction to your
questioning, your ideas, your thoughts and your cynicism, then be-
ware of those who argue the loudest. The truth does not care if it is
questioned; the truth can always stand up to questioning. I have
found that only the false fights back, retaliates, and attacks. The truth
might defend itself, though it does not really need to. But liars trying
to defend their lies get mean and dirty.

CHAPTER 20
The More You Give
the More You Get
We spend most of our lives trying to figure out how to get more when
the answer is so easy. You get more by giving more. Yes, it is as simple
as that. You get by giving. That is the irony.
You get to the proper weight by giving up the foods that are not
good for you. You get success by giving up all of the things that keep
you from being successful. Things like too much television, lousy
work habits, and being lazy.
See how it works? That is how you get more money, too. Give
some of the money you have.
GIVING MONEY
Give freely, joyously, lovingly, and with a sense of aban-
donment, and as you do, fabulous wealth inevitably will
be yours.

194 Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get a Life
Feed the children; feed the homeless; save the whales; save the
rain forest. Mothers Against Drunk Driving; AIDS research; United
Way; Jerry s Kids and on and on. Every one of these causes and all
of the others in the world could be financed and most of the prob-
lems solved if people would do some giving and stop talking about
doing some giving.
You hear people say what a shame it is we have children who
are starving right here in America. They are right, it is. It is a
shame to have anyone starving anywhere. So how much have
you given to bring an end to the problem? Really how much?
Give me a dollar amount. When did you give it? How long
ago? When was the last time you actually sat down and put pen to
check and gave a nice chunk of change to solve even one of the
world s problems?
Most people talk about all the good that needs to be done, and so
few do anything about it. It is just talk. Talk does not fix much. I
know: I sell talk.
Money Fixes Stuff
I grew up a foot-washing fundamentalist. One of the old gospel songs
I heard growing up was, You re so heavenly-minded you re no earthly
good. What a great thing for all of us to remember. Our thoughts are
so lofty so full of love so full of willingness to do anything within
our power to help. Anything but write a check.
Some people do give; I will grant you that. If you are one of the
few who do, then I applaud you. But most do not give. How can they
justify that? Is it because they do not have enough to give? Hardly.
Everyone has enough to give something. It is not because they do not
have it. It comes down to the fact they will not give it.

The More You Give the More You Get 195
Why? Are they afraid they will diminish their supply by giving
part of it away? Actually just the opposite is true. The more you give
of what you have, the more you actually get. It is the coolest thing. I
tried to figure that out for a long time until I discovered it was actually
one of the Laws of Physics.
Nature Abhors a Vacuum
It is only when you give things away that you make room for more.
And it is usually better stuff!
Try this: Go to your closet. Go to the bad end. Women, you know
exactly what I am talking about when I say the bad end. Men, you
probably do not have a clue which is the bad end because for most
men, both ends and the middle are bad. So ask a woman, a gay
friend, or me for help with this one. Now that you have identified the
bad end, pull out all of the clothes hanging there. Things you will
never wear again which have been out of style for years, and things
you could not begin to get your fat butt in any longer. Now give it
away. Do not argue with me just give it away. Do not take it to a re-
sale shop for a couple of bucks do not have a garage sale just give
it to an organization that can really use it.
But I won t have anything left to wear!
Good. Now you will have to replace it, with better stuff that you
like, that is in fashion and fits.
Look at your sofa. Hate it? Put it on the curb in front of your
house with a sign that says, Free. Within two hours it will disappear.
Within two weeks you will have replaced it.
And this is the cool part: giving to those who actually need what
you are getting rid of will help create the abundance necessary to re-
place it.

196 Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get a Life
The secret of prosperity is generosity, for by sharing with
others the good that life gives us we open up the well-
springs of abundance.
 J. Donald Walters

the more he had.

CHAPTER 21
Sometimes Work
Is Just Plain Work
No way to avoid it work is a part of everyone s life. You have to work.
I have not figured out a way to avoid it. Some have. Those are not
people you want to emulate, however. Work is a given, not just be-
cause it is the major source of your income but also because it is the
major source of both your personal and professional fulfillment and
inner satisfaction. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
